Artemis is the Greek Moon Goddess of the Hunt and Archery. (asteroid Diana 78)  Artemis is one of the most respected of all the ancient Greek deities. She and brother Apollo (asteroid 1862) were twin children to king of the gods :Zeus (5731) and mother was Titaness Leto. Artemis  was born first, a whole day sooner than her brother. This is said to attribute to her nurturing qualities. Artemis spent most of her time roaming the forests with her nymphs. She was described as both hunting animals and protecting them. Artemis was a virgin that drew in the interest of many gods and men. She appealed to Zeus to grant her eternal virginity. However, it was only her hunting companion, Orion, that won her heart in the end. Don’t get it twisted , her virginity was sacred and she guarded it as such. ANYONE who threatened her purity was met with violence and or. death. She even killed one of her nymphs that was seduced by Zeus by transforming into a bear and mauling her. Artemis acted out in anger whenever her wishes were disobeyed or if anyone transgressed against the animals that were sacred to her. Her and her brother teamed up to kill the children of Niobe. Niobe bragged that she had birthed more children than Leto (their mother). The twins then hunted her children and killed them with their bows and arrows.(made by Hephaestus and Cyclops.) Artemis is known as the protector of chastity , a nurturer of the young and as the patroness of childbirth. She also represents independence and freedom. Artemis possesses the power to inflict plagues and death or to heal. She is known as the protector of little children, baby animals (even though she also loves the hunt and never had children of her own) Artemis is one of the ‘virgin’ androgynous goddesses. and a temple built in her honor. It became one of the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.” There are two festivals celebrated in her honor: Brauronia and the festival of Artemis Orthia. Now for the kick ass version whoo!(in my 300 voice).. Artemisia of Caria was a cunning and brave woman who ruled as Queen of the Anatolian region of Caria. Her name comes from the Goddess Artemis.  Artemisia is most known for the Battle of Salamis in 480 B.C. She found herself trapped by a deadly Greek and Persian fleet of ships and literally broke her way out. She rammed her ship into the side of one of her own allied ships in an effort to confuse the enemies. It worked. Upon seeing this attack on the Persians, the Greeks mistakenly thought Artemisia’s ship was on their side so they let her slip through. During this battle, she also gave Persian king Xerxes expert advice and escorted his sons to safety.
